NH Check In

NH Check In lets you check in online to let hospital staff know you’ve arrived for your appointment. It’s currently live at select sites, and is being rolled out gradually across the North for services such as lab tests, x-ray, imaging, and ECG/Holter monitoring.

NH Check In helps make physical distancing easier:

  • Lets you wait and check in online from your car, home , or office
  • Lets you notify staff once you’ve arrived, without having to come inside the building
  • Reduces the amount of time you spend in waiting rooms
  • Controls the number of people in health care facilities
  • Reduces the number of people in waiting rooms

How to use:

1. Download the app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play store, or by scanning the QR code with the camera on your smart phone:

Using the free NH Check In app on your mobile device
  1. Download the Northern Health – NH Check In app from the app store on your smartphone. You can also scan the QR Code seen above.
  2. Turn on notifications for NH Check In in your settings and launch the app.
  3. Allow “Northern Health” to access your current location.
  4. You can also manually type in the location / city in the search field.
  5. Find the location and department you want to visit.
  6. If the location is open and supports NH Check In, you’ll see a Check In button:
  7. Click “Check In” and enter the following information:
    • Your name
    • Your phone number
  8. Click “Check In”, a confirmation page will appear.
  9. Click “Done”.
  10. You have checked in! Your estimated wait time will be displayed. Your wait time might fluctuate depending on patient need.
  11. When it’s your turn, we’ll let you know!
  12. Come on in and tell the staff you’ve arrived.

Cancelling your check in:

  1. Find the location and click on “Checked In”.
  2. Choose “Cancel Check In” and confirm removal.
  3. A confirmation page will appear. Click “Done”.

Using the NH Check In map
  1. Visit https://nhcheckin.ca/
  2. Go to the location finder at the top left of the page and allow your current location to be accessed.
  3. You can also manually type in the location / city on the search field.
  4. Find the location and department you want to visit.
  5. If the location is open and supports NH Check In, you’ll see a Check In button
  6. Click the Check In button and enter the following information:
    • Your name
    • Your phone number
  7. Click “Check In”, a confirmation page will appear.
  8. Click “Done”.
  9. You have checked in! Your estimated wait time will be displayed. Your wait time might fluctuate depending on patient need.
  10. When you get to the facility, click "I've arrived at Northern Health" at the bottom of your screen.
  11. Keep and eye on the map, when it's your turn you will see "Come in".
  12. Come on in and tell the staff you’ve arrived.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Who do I call if I have trouble downloading the NH Check In app?

Call 1-800-735-1436. This will take you to ICSUSA, the company that developed NH Check In.

Does NH Check In work on Android?

Yes, the app works on both Android and Apple mobile phones.

Does it work on Apple?

Yes, the app works on both Android and Apple mobile phones.

Does NH Check In work on my computer?

Yes, you can use NH Check In from a computer. See the above NH Check In map.

Is NH Check In used only for lab tests, or can I check in for other medical appointments?

NH Check In will eventually be used for many different types of medical appointments: lab tests, x-ray and imaging, ECG/Holter monitoring, etc. However, NH Check In is being rolled out gradually across the North, and many departments aren’t using it yet.

Can I make an appointment using the app/website?

No, NH Check In only lets you check in for your appointment. You cannot book an appointment through NH Check In. It’s a way for you to let hospital staff know you’ve arrived. You can check in for both scheduled and walk-in appointments.

I can’t find NH Check In in my community – why not?

NH Check In is being trialled in a small number of selected communities first, then rolling out more widely across the North. Watch for updates as we add more sites!

Is this the same program that LifeLabs uses?

NH Check In is very similar to the “Save My Spot” program used by Life Labs. The two products were both developed by ICSUSA, and although NH Check In is very similar to “Save My Spot,” it’s not exactly the same.

What if I don’t have a computer or smartphone?

If you don’t have a computer or smart phone, that’s not a problem. You can still contact the site or department as you always have, either in person or by phone.

Am I still allowed to wait in the waiting room if I can’t use NH Check In, or if I don’t want to?

Yes, you can still wait in waiting rooms if you prefer, depending on the facility’s protocols. There will be safety measures in place to ensure safe physical distancing for everyone.

Can I check in on somebody else’s behalf – e.g., for an elderly parent?

Yes, you can check in for another person, but it’s important for you to know that any communication and wait time updates will be provided to the mobile phone or computer that was used to check in. You can’t forward or share the Check In information with other phones or computers.

Do I have to wait close to where the appointment will happen?

Ideally, you would check in about 30 minutes before arriving at the facility, but this will depend on your community and how far away you live.

Does NH Check In require a log in and password?

No, you do not need to log in or provide a password.

Can I check into more than one service or department at the same time?

No. NH Check In only lets you check in to one lineup at a time.

Are NH staff trained on privacy?

All staff members sign a confidentiality agreement and complete mandatory privacy awareness training at time of hire, and annually thereafter.

How do I know that my personal information is safe and secure?

Our security practices are designed to protect your personal information and prevent unauthorized access. Only authorized employees are permitted to access personal information and only when access is necessary. Your information is protected using industry best practices, and all information is transmitted over secure, encrypted channels.

What if I lose my requisition?

If you lose your requisition and it hasn’t been faxed or emailed to the department, you’ll need to get another copy from your health care provider. Processes may be different at each site, so please check with the department you’re going to for how to make sure they get the replacement requisition.

Do I really need my health care provider to sign the requisition?

Yes. If you have a requisition, it must be signed by your health care provider. Northern Health can’t accept or process unsigned requisitions.
