Building description

The Pines is a one-level facility with 2 main resident wings centered around common activity, lounge and dining areas.

Building amenities

The building features many amenities and services including an activities and entertainment room, a large open dining room, indoor lounges and outdoor courtyards.  Additional amenities include a hair salon and private family space, nail and foot care, hairdressing/barber services.

Language, culture or religious affiliation

Persons living in a long-term care home are offered spiritual support through various religious and spiritual groups. Spiritual care may be provided through group meetings, one –to-one visits, sermons and music & song.

Accreditation status

Northern Health is accredited. Accreditation is an external peer review process to assess and improve the services health care organizations provide their patients and clients based on standards of excellence set by Accreditation Canada. For more information, visit Accreditation | Northern Health.

Type of accommodation

We have a total of 36 publicly subsidized beds which includes 35 permanent long-term care beds and 1 short stay bed used for community respite care. The Pines also has a combination of single and double occupancy rooms.

Cost

Residents pay 80% of their after tax income, with minimum and maximum rates set by the Ministry of Health Services. This rate covers the standard benefits provided by all long-term care homes. These costs are available on request or in the Long Term Care Home Resident and Family Handbook.

There are typical additional costs not covered by the daily rate.

Personal belongings and furniture

Basic furniture is provided includes a bed, night table, wardrobe or dresser, and lamp. Residents can bring in additional small furniture items such as a chair, bookshelf/TV stand. Residents are encouraged to personalize their room by decorating it with pictures and things of importance.

Special recreational opportunities

The Pines provides Recreational Therapy Services on a daily basis. Pastoral and Spiritual Services are provided by local clergy and other spiritual care resources. There is a Volunteer Program in place to accompany Residents on social outings, appointments, and assist with feeding. Hairdressing and barber services are available on site for a fee determined by the service provider.

The Pines also provides an on-site integrated community adult day program, operating 3 days per week.

Motorized scooter policy

Motorized Scooter storage is available on site.

Pet policy

NH has a pet visitation policy. Pets may visit as long as immunizations are up to date, pet is well mannered, on a leash in common areas and family is responsible for cleaning up after pet.

Smoking policy

All Northern Health facilities are smoke free. Residents are asked to smoke outside the facility in designated areas.

Safety/security features

Security checks are conducted nightly and night care staff check on residents regularly. The facility has locked doors with coded entry for safety of residents.

Front entrance secure after business hours and weekends.

Visitor information

Families and loved ones are partners in care and are encouraged to visit and participate in many of the day-to-day activities.  

During flu season (typically December-March) all visitors need to wear a mask in our facilities if they haven't had a flu shot.

The Pines does not have designated visiting hours in keeping with the resident and family centered philosophy of care. Families are, however, encouraged to respect rest and sleep times for residents of the facility.

Free parking is available.

Neighbourhood/community amenities

The Pines is located across the street from Lakes District Hospital and up the road from medical and dental offices. The Rambler community bus is available to assist with transportation within the village of Burns Lake and with The Pines organized outings.
