Building description

Birchview Residences is a two-story building with 20 individual rooms. Each room has large windows to view the outdoors and surrounding plants and trees. The building is equipped with central heating with individual room temperature controls, heat and smoke detectors, and a fire sprinkler system throughout the building.  

Our facility is located in a beautiful rural country setting, less than ten minutes from the University Hospital of Northern BC (UHNBC) in Prince George.

Building amenities

Resident areas are designated to accommodate individual or groups family settings. We offer three hot and nutritious meals a day. The cooks can also cater to a family gathering if requested. We have a covered balcony to enjoy the midday sun. Inside, there's a piano and an activity room with a library. There's spacious parking for vehicles and RVs and a greenhouse where residents and families can participate during the growing season. Local shopping, a mall and restaurants are within a 5 minute drive.

Language, culture or religious affiliation

Residents living at Birchview Residence are offered spiritual support through Sunday service. Birchview will also make arrangements with the different denominations to provide one-on-one pastoral support.

To provide a compassionate, dignified, and safe home-like environment for each individual resident in our care, through efforts of trained, dedicated staff, and to strive to continually improve our services using best practice models of care.

Type of accommodation

We provide care ranging from respite to complex care to the varying needs of many seniors. Ten publicly funded beds are provided through Northern Health and there are 10 private beds.  All rooms are private with a private two-piece bath.

Personal belongings and furniture

Basic furniture is provided in all rooms including a bed, night table, and dresser. Residents and family are encouraged to decorate the rooms with their own furniture.

Special recreational opportunities

There is an engaging recreational program which offers a wide variety of activities. These include, but are not limited to, range of motion exercise classes, various games, therapeutic programs of walking and strength training, and gardening in our green house. Social settings and supported outings and gatherings are inclusive of families and friends.

Motorized scooter policy

For the safety of everyone, motorized scooters are not permitted inside the building.

Pet policy

Birchview Residence has a resident cat. Personal pets are welcome to enjoy short visits but require advance permission from administration. We require all pets to be fully up to date with their immunizations, and dogs should remain on leash when in public areas. We also have visiting animals as part of the recreation and therapy programs.

Smoking policy

All Northern Health facilities are smoke free. Residents are required to smoke outside the facility in designated areas.

Safety/security features

Resident call bell: An emergency call system located in each room and washrooms to ensure timely assistance. Residents wear a call bell device on them at all times. This is monitored by staff 24/7.

Security monitoring: All entrance and exits to the building are secured with access codes. We also have CCTV cameras installed and monitored 24/7 for resident and staff safety.

In the event of an emergency, there are regularly reviewed protocols and practices to ensure the building and workers are well prepared and familiar with procedures.

Visitor information

Families and loved ones are partners in care and are encouraged to visit and participate in many of the day-to-day activities.

During influenza season (typically December-March), to help protect patients from the flu, all visitors will be expected to wear a mask in our facility if they have not had the influenza vaccine. If you're not feeling well, we ask you to refrain from visiting our residents.

Visiting hours are flexible and you'e more than welcome to visit at any time. However, if you're taking a resident out of the facility, we request you give us advance notice so the resident will be ready for the outing.

Parking (resident/visitor)

There is onsite parking at the facility and there's no charge for visitors to park.

Neighbourhood/community amenities

Birchview Residence is located on the Hart. We are in the neighbourhood of the “Hart Seniors Centre” which has hosted us on many occasions. Schools, shopping, restaurants and grocery stores are a 5 minute drive from Birchview.
