Residential Care

Residential care settings range from an independant housing or supportive living arrangement to assisted living, licensed residential care or extended care.  Information on this website is intended to help consumers gather information about licensed residential care facilities. Residential care for children and youth is also regulated under the Residential Care Regulations.

Licensed residential care facilities provide care and supervision for persons who cannot live on their own.  When "care" is provided to three or more persons who are not related by blood or marriage, they are considered a Community Care Facility.  "Care" is defined as providing three or more of the following prescribed services:

  • Regular assistance with activities of daily living (e.g. eating, mobility, dressing, bathing)
  • Storage & administration of medication or monitoring the taking of medication
  • Maintenance or management of cash resources or other property of person in care
  • Monitoring food intake or adherence to therapeutic diets
  • Structure behaviour management and intervention
  • Psychosocial or intensive physical rehabilitative therapy

The Northern Health, Home and Community Care program conducts assessments to determine eligibility for placement in a care facility, assists in completing applications and in choosing a residential facility. You are also encouraged to visit each facility that you are considering before making a final decision.

You should contact your Home and Community Care office for more information about eligibility for admission. You are also encouraged to visit the facility to determine, first hand, if it will meet the needs and life style for you or your loved one.
