Care North

Care North is one of the steps that Northern Health is taking to improve care for patients with chronic diseases, while bringing health professionals closer together to boost health outcomes and quality of life.

Care North is a partnership between Northern Health and northern physicians, as well as care providers working within Northern Health sites. Through Care North, Northern Health and northern physicians will focus on measurably improving the quality of the primary health care services that the people of northern British Columbia receive.

NH is aiming to improve health outcomes, disease prevention/health promotion, patient and provider experience and access to/efficiency of health care services. This has involved changes through several pilot projects in communities across the north, which work to help people with chronic diseases like diabetes or congestive heart failure better manage their day-to-day health needs.

The Care North team is making improvements happen by using the extensive and growing body of knowledge regarding best clinical and administrative practices and the ways to put changes in place.

Care North direction comes from a steering committee that includes Northern Health and family physician leaders. Its formal co-leaders are Judy Huska (executive director of primary care) and Dr. Dan Horvat (medical lead for primary care and assistant professor, Northern Medical Program, University of British Columbia). Care North also receives exceptional support from area physicians, the Northern Health Board, and NH's management team.

Northern Health has embraced Care North as one of the best ways to improve the quality and accessibility of the health services for the people of Northern British Columbia.
